29 May 2008 | Central Otago Subdivision approved

A second application for a subdivision at Cairnmuir Station, west of Cromwell, has been successful. This follows the rejection of an earlier application which had more visible building platforms and road cuttings across the station.

Cairnmuir Station Estates managing director Charlie Grant modified the ealier proposal to provide for a cluster of seven residential sites ranging from 2ha to 3.9h grouped in the south-western corner of the property, with just one right of way required instead of roads being visible across the whole site.

Lot one from the new subdivision comprises land best suited for vineyard or horticulture development in keeping with the adjoining properties, and has a "no further subdivision" clause, with the higher 175ha continuing to be used for extensive grazing and recreation.

One of the new conditions agreed for the consent was differing maximum building heights to prevent protrusion on to the skyline, and specific colours for roofs and walls that would blend better with the surrounding landscape.

The cluster idea, albeit on greater than 2ha lots, was a better outcome than what would have resulted from the earlier consent, according to the Central Otago District Council hearings committee.

A total of 63 conditions have been imposed on the subdivision.
